How Speeding Tickets Affect Your Auto Insurance Rates
The importance of going the speed limit is something you should have learned in driver's education class. Speed limits were established for the safety of drivers and should be upheld by all. However, even the best drivers sometimes get speeding tickets. Being in a hurry, getting distracted while driving or simply disregarding your speedometer can all lead to speeding tickets. But how do these tickets affect your auto insurance rates? Let's just say they are costly in more ways than one. Not only do you have to pay the ticket, your policy may also cost more.
When you are given an official car insurance rate by an agent, or even a quote from a website, there are various factors considered. This includes your age, marital status, make and model of automobile, and of course your driving history. At the time of becoming insured, a driver with no speeding tickets is likely to get a favorable rate, whereas a driver with several will pay substantially more for their insurance coverage because they are deemed a high risk driver.
If you get your first speeding ticket ever, don't worry too much about it. As long as you pay the ticket on time it is unlikely your insurance rates will rise, and if they do it will not be by much. It is the chronic speeders who end up with big adjustments to their car insurance costs. Now, there is an exception to every rule, including this one. First time offenders who are caught going many miles over the speed limit (we're talking reckless driving) could pay a larger amount and possibly face criminal charges.
When you are unfortunate enough to get a ticket, one point is added to your driving history. These points are what insurance companies look at when determining your auto insurance rates. If you get into an accident, get a DUI or get more speeding tickets, more points are added. Needless to say the more negative points on your record, the higher your car insurance rate is going to be. The first and most important reason to obey the speed limit and all driving laws is your safety, the safety of your passengers, and the safety of other drivers on the road. However the hefty ticket costs and raise in your rates can also make a good motivation.
